Org. Setting and Reporting The Communications and Engagement Officer reports to the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Office of Human Resources (OHR) and the Office of the UN Ombudsman and Mediation Services (OMS). As part of his campaign to end racism in the Organization, in September 2020 the UN Secretary-General established the Task Force on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity for All in the United Nations. The year-long Task Force is mandated with overseeing the Secretary-General’s campaign on antiracism in the Organization and to devise a long-term Strategic Action Plan towards ending racism and ensuring racial equity for all.

The Communications and Engagement Officer will support the work of the Task Force including implementation of its internal communications strategy focused on UN Secretariat staff and other stakeholder engagement in this campaign, and communications support to OHR and OMS in their respective roles in leading the Task Force’s activities.

The position is available as of 1 December 2020 for a period of 364 days.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following: •Work directly with the Task Force Coordinator, the Chief of the Staffing Diversity and Outreach Section, OMS and DGC colleagues to advance the Task Force’s communications priorities and deliverables. •Support the activities of the Task Force by conceptualizing and implementing effective internal communications strategies to promote UN Secretariat staff engagement in this year-long campaign. •Conceptualize and manage creation of specific types of communications products (e.g. articles, QnAs, audio-visual materials, e-flyers, e-banners, etc.) related to this campaign and the impact of antiracism and anti-racial discrimination programmes and initiatives, to be used across the UN Secretariat’s ecosystem of internal platforms (including iSeek, HR Portal, etc.). •Proactively seek out, encourage and amplify staff engagement opportunities including through Staff Voices on iSeek. •Coordinate engagement activities of staff “champions/change agents” who will be solicited across the global Secretariat and report back on outcomes. •Participate in the Communications Working Group and support the Group’s planning, execution and reporting, and adherence to deadlines. Collaborate with other Working Groups to ensure coherence. •Supervise content production consultants. •As required, assist OMS with communications related to the diversity awareness and action related initiatives. •Other duties, as required.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

TEAMWORK: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public relations or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public relations or related area is required. Experience drafting public information materials (e.g. articles, feature stories, QnAs, press releases, etc.) is required. Experience conceptualizing and producing multimedia feature materials is required. Experience in the technical aspects of multimedia production, such as creating short video pieces, is desirable. Experience in compiling data analytics is desirable. Experience in project management is desirable At least two years’ experience working in the UN system or a similar international entity is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
