Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Ethiopia Digital Country Lead or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Communication & Knowledge Management Specialist will:

  1. Support the implementation of the Communications and Visibility (C&V) strategy of Leaving no one behind in the digital era” strategy in Ethiopia and Malawi.

    • Coordinate with the support and supervision of the Country Digital Lead, the implementation of the Communication and Visibility strategy of “Leaving No One Behind in the Digital Era” in Ethiopia and Malawi according to UNCDF standards and procedures.
    • Author Communications and Visibility plans for Ethiopia and Malawi.
    • Develop and monitor budgets for implementation of the Communications and Visibility plan.
    • Support the documentation of the lessons learned during programme and project activities.
    • Ensure Communication and Visibility deliverables in project implementation are developed and tracked.
    • Respond to the need for knowledge of the sector by sharing knowledge products from the programme
    • Assist the Ethiopia and Malawi teams in incorporating Communication and Visibility inputs into the drafting of project documents and during project implementation.
  2. Coordinate content creation and content management including visual material library and social media management

    • Develop an editorial plan in close coordination with the country teams and produce relevant content related to program activities for the Programme webpages, and the news section of the UNCDF website, in compliance with guidelines and standards used throughout UNCDF.
    • Write, edit and disseminate media and content, such as press releases, articles, blog posts, case studies, infographics, brochures, presentations and videos;
    • Coordinate the design and visibility of content developed by partners.
    • Contribute to tasks or activities that require content writing and documentation of program knowledge (writing semi-annual and annual activity reports, etc.).
    • Produce reports and present the trends in traditional and social media in Uganda to the team and partners; identify new opportunities to increase the visibility of the programme’s work.
    • Lead and supervise the procurement process for the issuance of the communication collaterals for the programme (country brochure, roll up banners, note pads etc) in close coordination with the operation team. Create, curate, and store a collection of high-quality visual materials for publications that illustrate the program's activities.
    • Record all publications, clippings, videos in the Excel KM dashboard. Ensure all final versions of publications are saved according the programmes filing rules.
    • Coordinate the work of external vendors, monitor their performance, assure that all deliverables are submitted within budget and in time.
  3. Assure the visibility of the programme through the organization of conferences and information sharing workshops
    • Design and execute a country launch event for Ethiopia and Malawi.
    • Develop strategy to increase networking and mutual learning among UNCDF partners in Ethiopia and Malawi and other UNCDF partners in the region;
    • Ensure all major local media providers are briefed on UNCDF Pogramme and Strategy “ Leaving No One Behind in the Digital Era” in Ethiopia and Malawi to build relationships and increase programme visibility and share knowledge;
    • Plan, procure and coordinate the organization of conferences, workshops, technical working groups and webinars and participate as necessary.
    • Support the team in producing presentations for events.
  4. Contribute to the development of the network of partners.
    • Liaise with the press/media to advocate and disseminate information on UNCDF work as well as relevant events such as campaigns.
    • Organize interviews and filming opportunities to support high visibility of UNCDF Programme achievements through television, radio and newspapers and social media.
    • Update Programme contact database and list of service providers. A specific section on local media providers, the services they offer and costs;
    • Ensure contributions and comments on UNCDF web platforms are addressed in a reasonable timeframe
    • Liaise closely with the UN Communications Group’s and actively participate in the Inter-agency schedule of activities in Ethiopia and Malawi

Educational additional comments

Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Communication, International Development, Public Administration, Project Management

Experience remark

  • At least three years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communications, journalism, marketing, or other relevant programmes; experience with copy editing is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
  • It is mandatory to have an excellent ability to write policy and strategy briefs in English.
  • Experience authoring Government policies, private sector strategies and UN publications is an advantage.
  • It is desirable to have a background in digital finance, ITC for Development (ICT4D) and financial inclusion.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, Share point, etc.) and internet research and social media; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete)
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in poverty alleviation using digital tools to support marginalized populations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
