This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Community Security and Stabilization Programme Manager and Project Coordinator, the NUN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Programme management activities

  • Working in close collaboration with programme Units, Programme teams as well as field offices, and Government officials to successfully deliver project results and will perform the following functions:
  • In coordination with management, mainstreaming of climate security into community-based stabilization and PVE efforts, as well as strategic engagement level on climate security with UNITAMs, the Government of Sudan and on the Juba Peace agreement
  • Under direct guidance from Khartoum office, prepares analysis of climate related security risks, including impacts on environmental degradation and conflict over natural resources in Sudan under the guidance of and in close coordination with programme team in Khartoum
  • Scales up existing initiatives which focused on mainstreaming climate-related security risks into stabilization efforts in the villages of Togley and Kelaik in Kassala state
  • In collaboration with relevant partners, identify areas for further research and analysis on the issue of climate-security in the country; identify potential national partners who can implement the research activities;
  • Enhance the capacity of the government, in particular, the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Environment and Ministry of Food Security to address the issues of climate-security in the country through the platforms provided by the UN and other multilateral entities.
  • Provide advisory support to strengthen the capacity of the public and private sector to address the issues of climate-security in the country.
  • Supports the knowledge management of above projects
  • Coordinate with implementing partners and monitor closely their implementation, and ensure the timely delivery of the activities;
  • Coordinate between and report on the progress of activities of the climate security project
  • Collect (and analyze) on a regular basis relevant data and information, new development, existing regulations, guidelines, government strategies relevant to the activities of the project;
  • Monitor the progress of the different project activities and submit regular reports on the progress, accomplishments, difficulties, lessons learnt etc.;
  • Identify and understand community needs and capacities to inform the selection of interventions;
  • Conduct household visits and hearings from relevant stakeholders to understand specific needs;
  • Monitor closely the implementation of the activities, and identify potential risks and issues for the local governance specialist;
  • Capture transformative changes of beneficiaries and communities through household visits and interviews, and support development of informational material (i.e. success stories);

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Master’s degree in political science, international development, sustainable development, conflict studies, environmental management, natural resource management.

Required experience:

48 Months

Experience remark:

4-5 years of experience in the field of socio-economic development, community engagement, social cohesion and previous experience in public sector or with a multilateral or international organization. Strong knowledge of the social, economic and development priorities of Sudan is required.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
