Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Office of the Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). Under the guidance of the Director-General, the incumbent directs and manages the Office of the Director-General, provides strategic advice, political support and diplomatic ‘back channel’ to the Director-General, ensures overall strategic coordination of the substantive support to the Director-General in the implementation of his/her mandate on behalf of the Secretary-General.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

- Provides for strategic planning of the Director-General’s political and managerial objectives in cooperation with heads of Divisions and Services at UNOG, as well as Departments at United Nations Headquarters. - Provides policy advice and recommendations to the Director-General in the exercise of his/her functions and supports the Director-General in the overall management of UNOG. - Coordinates the activities of UNOG Divisions and Services as related to the Director-General’s responsibilities and monitors implementation. - Formulates and implements the work programme of the Office of the Director-General, determining priorities and monitoring progress; oversees the management and organization of the office, including preparation of the budget and processing of human resources matters. - Reviews and supervises the output of the office, organizes the flow of activities and follows up on substantive and administrative matters. - Manages the correspondence of the Director-General and coordinates follow-up across UNOG. Oversees the preparation of and reviews draft correspondence, official statements, briefing notes, talking points and reports for the Director-General’s signature or clearance; conducts relevant research and prepares background papers on matters of concern to the office. - Maintains liaison with Heads of Mission and other high-ranking representatives of Member States, as well as other international organizations and external partners on substantive, political and procedural questions, and provides advice to the Director-General on these issues. - Undertakes missions at the Director-General’s request. - In the absence of the Director-General, receives visitors, performs representational functions, organizes, and attends meetings on the Director-General’s behalf.

Education An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in international relations, political science, management, or other relevant field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience At least fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs and/or management in a politically sensitive environment, including at least seven years at the international level is required.

Experience in the coordination of the activities and the provision of strategic policy advice to senior-level officials on a range of managerial and political questions is required.

Experience in the application of United Nations policies and procedures is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English or French, with solid drafting abilities in any one language, and working knowledge of the other are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
