BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., the IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The case management program includes providing core services to new arrivals, and helping clients work towards self-sufficiency during their first two years in the U.S. in the areas of health, employment, finances, DWS, education, housing, family, and community. Casework interns work closely with the casework supervisors throughout their internship, assisting and learning about all aspects of the casework program.

COMMITMENT: 12-16 weeks starting in January 2022 with option to extend, 15+ hours per week in-person in 4+ hour blocks of time, flexible schedule including some evenings and Saturdays.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Shadowing a Casework Manager for two-weeks at start of internship on the following new arrival services: airport pickup, home safety orientation, grocery shopping, apply for social security card, apply for benefits at DWS, activate EBT card, lease signing, setting up utilities, office intake, furniture delivery, bus orientations, paying bills, cleaning orientation, etc.

• Assisting with Core Services: ESL & public school enrollment, cultural orientation, housing applications, transportation to appointments.

• Assisting Casework team with needs assessment, budgeting, service plan, home visits.

• Assisting with referrals and connecting refugee clients to community services.

• Assisting with files, case notes, data entry, participation in weekly case staffing meetings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will deepen understanding of refugee resettlement process in Utah.

2. The intern will gain professional experience working with clients from diverse cultural background and providing case management services.

3. The intern will learn about community resources and support liaising between service providers and refugee families.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Background in social work or other related fields.

• Experience working with refugees/diverse populations.

• Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle; willingness to utilize personal vehicle to transport refugee families and individuals.

• Motivated, flexible and ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage time effectively.

• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.

• Ability to work fully in person when needed and comfortable working with clients (with all COVID-19 safety & precautions in place).
