Duties and Responsibilities Organization Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office of UNEP delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy announcement is meant to solicit applications for rostering purposes to serve as the pool of expertise that UNEP West Asia Office is creating within the framework of the long-term strategic partnership and the Saudi Environment Sustainability Programme with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Saudi, the expert will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Provide technical advice on the implementation of biodiversity and ecosystems national frameworks. 2. Provide technical expertise and support to plan, manage, coordinate, and monitor biodiversity conservation activities 3. Analyse current state of biodiversity, undertake relevant research, and highlight potential improvement opportunities 4. Review the existing policies and provisions related to biodiversity conservation and ensure compliance with related regulations and policies 5. Identify regulatory gaps and propose amendments to existing standards and requirements 6. Identify, pursue, strategize, and support on initiatives and efforts focused on biodiversity conservation 7. Provide technical expertise to facilitate the execution of biodiversity conservation and sustainable land/resource management components and activities. 8. Promote adoption of best practices related to biodiversity conservation. 9. Track and protect threatened species. 10. Promote and support development of Protected Area (PA). 11. Support development of Species Management Plans. 12. Support the establishment of sustainable financing mechanisms for efficient management of Protected Areas.

Outputs / Work Assignments (Deliverables):

1. An initial assessment of the status of implementation of biodiversity related MEAs 2. A status report on biodiversity conservation in Saudi Arabia 3. Training manuals and capacity building for MEWA staff on biodiversity conservation including protected areas, land use and land mapping, and biodiversity planning. 4. A final report on biodiversity in Saudi Arabia.

Qualifications/special skills Master’s (or PhD) in Biodiversity Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, or related fields is required.

A minimum of 10 years professional experience in biodiversity conservation is required.

Previous practical experience in similar tasks in biodiversity conservation, protected areas, land mapping and land use is required.

Experience working in West Asia is desirable.

Languages Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
