This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Human Rights Team Leader, the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

  • Develop an understanding of International Human Rights and International Human Rights Law, including Afghanistan’s international treaty obligations and constitutional protections particularly in respect of UNAMA’s human rights priorities. These include gender equality, the elimination of violence against women (EVAW), protection of civilians and children in armed conflict, conflict-related detention and protection of human rights defenders, among other issues.
  • Develop an understanding of UNAMA’s mandate, including the political nexus between peace, human rights and development.
  • Under the supervision of the Central Field Office’s Human Rights team leader, monitor, verify and report on human rights violations as well as prepare related notes to file.
  • Learn to handle sensitive and confidential information with due care and perform impartially. In coordination with the CFO’s Gender Assistant engage in gender equality mainstreaming activities, particularly in the context of the promotion of Women, Peace and Security (UN SC Resolution 1325) initiatives in various provinces (Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Maidan Wardak, Kabul).
  • Participate in Central Field Office’s conflict resolution efforts in the context of Local Peace Initiatives led by political affairs service staff specifically in support of tracks involving women and youth. In support of UNAMA colleagues, engage with civil society representatives as wells government officials in six provinces (Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Logar and Maidan Wardak).
  • Monitor media for information related to developments in the field of politics, peace and human rights.
  • Translate and interpret from Pashto/Dari to English and vice-versa as required in meetings.
  • Perform other related as requested by the Human Rights team leader and the Head of Office.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

  • Preferably in political/social sciences, economics, international relations, law, human rights, sociology or a related field, journalism

  • Previous experience in human rights work is Mandatory
  • Previous experience in political affairs and political reporting work will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in work on gender equality and the advancement of women will be considered an asset.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Dari(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
