Organizational Setting The Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector, integrating scientific, technical expertise and policy advice. It hosts several technical networks (e.g. animal health, genetics, feed), provides information, analysis and technical assistance to FAO Members, and facilitates policy dialogue, including through intergovernmental bodies. The Animal Production and Genetics Branch (NSAG) generates information and manages knowledge, facilitates the development and implementation of innovative solutions, and provides technical expertise to improve productivity, efficiency and resilience of livestock production. Its activities cover all production systems and aim to enhance their sustainability in its three pillars: environmental, economic and social. The position is located in the Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines The Animal Production Officer (Livestock Development) reports to the senior Animal Production Officer, NSAG, and is under the overall supervision of the Senior Animal Production Officer. The incumbent will contribute the four betters of FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31: better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life. For each of these aspirations, the incumbent will contribute to at least two programme priority areas.

Technical Focus Enhance the sustainability and resilience of livestock production systems, especially of small-scale livestock producers.

Key Results Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions • Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services; • Supports the integration of gender equality and women's empowerment in FAO's work, including the disaggregation of data by sex and age where appropriate; • Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages; • Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects; • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases; • Participates on multi-disciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other departments and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices; • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within member countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials and on-line tools; • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations; • Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.

Specific Functions • Supports the implementation of the multi-year programme of work of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG)'s Sub-Committee on Livestock; • Coordinates the consultations on the need, scope, nature, and process for the development of a voluntary guidance tool for the sustainable enhancement of small-scale livestock productivity; • Acts as focal point for livestock Farmer Field School (FFS) activities, including the production of livestock FFS manuals and the implementation of field projects; • Drafts, reviews or coordinates the development of publications and other technical content related to livestock sector development, particularly poultry and dairy; • Acts as a member of the team responsible for (i) transferring the web-based version of the Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT) to a web-based platform, (ii) building capacity on Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT), and (iii) preparing and implementing future FAO projects for the development of Livestock Master Plans or related work; • Supports the formulation and implementation of livestock projects, in particular the 'Projet Régional d'Appui au Pastoralisme au Sahel, phase 2 (PRAPS-2) and Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) programme; • Performs other related duties, as requested.

Minimum Requirements • Advanced university degree in animal science or a related field. • Five years of relevant experience in the livestock sector development. • Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of one of the other languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions. • Understanding of FAO policies and programmes, including FAO governing bodies and intergovernmental processes. • Demonstrated ability and experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical and policy documents related to livestock development. • Extent and relevance of experience in livestock sector development, particularly small-scale poultry and/or dairy production. • Extent and relevance of experience in livestock farmer field school. • Ability to edit and write clearly and concisely technical content for publication.
