Job description

As part of the German Government's national hydrogen strategy, GIZ will support South Africa in building a hydrogen economy. The aim is to support appropriate framework conditions for the development and scaling of green hydrogen products, to improve local scientific expertise and skills in this area, to promote innovative technical solutions and to accompany possible pilot projects for the production and use of green hydrogen. To this end, key South African stakeholders from government, academia, and private sector and civil society need technical and strategic advice based on previous international experience.

Your tasks

  • Providing technical and strategic advice to South African stakeholders from government, academia and private sector and civil society on appropriate legal and policy frameworks for green hydrogen, on building local human resources, on promoting innovative technical solutions and on implementing initial pilot projects for the production and use of green hydrogen.
  • Preparation of baseline studies for the promotion of green hydrogen in South Africa
  • Preparation of new GIZ commissions on hydrogen in South Africa
  • Dialogue with interested companies in Europe and South Africa on possible cooperation in the field of hydrogen
  • Supporting the technical, conceptual and strategic development of the topic “hydrogen” for GIZ

Your profile

  • University degree in energy or engineering sciences, economics or comparable
  • Sound technical knowledge and work experience in the development of green hydrogen
  • Several years of relevant professional experience, preferably gained abroad, in the field of energy economics/politics
  • Work experience in South Africa and knowledge of the South African energy sector is an advantage
  • Broad network in the field of hydrogen in Germany and the EU
  • Several years of experience in cooperation with the private sector, preferably in the field of hydrogen
  • Good instinct for political and technical advice as well as high political sensitivity
  • Business-fluent English skills; knowledge of German is an advantage
