Position: Adult Education Management Intern Reports to: Family Education Coordinator Term:January-May 2022 Hours: 20-hours/week (flexible) Please note this is an unpaid position and requires a background check

The IRC New York Regional office’s Education & Learning department aims to meet the educational needs of adult refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations in New York City. We offer a variety of classes and services, including English language instruction, Cultural Orientation, College and Career Readiness, and referrals to external educational opportunities. Together, these form a comprehensive multi-faceted program designed to meet the immediate and ongoing education needs of our diverse group of clients.


Intern will assist the program Coordinator in supporting diverse client short- and long-term goals:


- Enroll adult students and in appropriate classes around NY - Keep track of client communication and follow-up on attendance - Maintain timely databases on the different tracking systems - Be an advocate for clients’ educational needs with external education service providers - Attend weekly supervision meetings with the program Coordinator


- The Adult Education Management Intern will - Get hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US - Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NYC - Build communication and outreach skills with different stakeholders



- Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills

- Ability to adapt to changing situations, comfortable working in a fast-paced, demanding environment - Ability to work both independently and as part of a team - Proficient in MS Office suite (especially Excel) - Responsible, flexible, and dedicated - Reliable: will commit to term and hours listed above - Must be able to pass a background check - Experience teaching Adults or English language learners a plus - Bilingual speaking abilities highly desirable (Spanish, French, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, or Farsi)
