This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Child Protection Unit and the direct supervion of a delegated staff member in the Child Protection Unit the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. General Administration:

Coordination of the office administrative tasks including but not limited to:

  • Coordination with child protection staff at MHQ and frequent liaising with field offices staff as to provide necessary support;
  • Drafting official e-mails or messages, submitting leave requests, MoP/Travel Authorization, Travel requests to Human Resources and Mission Support;
  • Filing and archiving official correspondences and administrative files/documents;
  • Providing administrative assistance during child protection training sessions and Section retreats;
  • Providing assistance during VIP visits and chief of section international travels;
  • Providing assistance to staff dealing with administrative applications used in Peacekeeping: UMOJA, FSS, ineed, Inspira;
  • Providing assistance in drafting child protection budget, and provision of administrative contribution in processing Trainings and programmatic activities, grants, or other joint activities as appropriate;
  • Identifying and resolving diverse administrative issues and problems as they arise, determining the appropriate actions and prioritizing the response.
  1. Budget and Finance
  • Providing expert assistance and coordination in the preparation and development of the section’s/office’s work plan and budget;
  • Assisting in monitoring budget against work plan, with respect to various budget requirements;
  • Reviewing, analyzing and assisting in the finalization of the cost estimates and budget proposals, in terms of staff and non-staff requirements for the section/office, including programmatic activities;
  • Assisting Child Protection Section Chief in the elaboration of resource requirements for budget submissions;
  • Monitoring budget implementation/expenditures and recommends reallocation of funds as necessary;
  • Reviewing and verifying the availability of funds for all requisitions ensuring that the correct object of expenditure has been charged;
  • Monitoring extra-budgetary resources, including review of agreements and cost plans, ensuring compliance with regulations and rules and established policies and procedures.

C. Any ad hoc tasks as prescribed by the Section Chief or his delegates.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote capacity development activities and transfer of skills to national personnel during the assignment;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Technical/Vocational diploma

Education - Additional Comments:

Type of Degree: High school or equivalent diploma is required. Technical or vocational certificate in finance, audit, risk management, accounting or related area is desirable.

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience within the United Nations system or the private sector, in the field of administration, finance, accounting, human resources, audit, or in other related fields, of which two (2) years should have been at a supervisory role.
  • Experience in international operations, in a post-conflict environment, is desirable.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

  • Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in Data base managementvarious proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, power-point etc.);
  • Proficiency in technical Peace Keeping applications (FSS, UMOJA, iNeed, Inspira);
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
  • Sound security awareness.
